HUGE Test for Maty Mauk in 1st Career Start

0 Views 0 Comments

Coming out of Kenton High School in Ohio, Maty Mauk was a proven winner.  He was known for his ability to make plays from both in the pocket and outside the pocket and having the vision to see the entire field and make the plays that many other quarterbacks could never dream of making.  That skill-set made him a Parade All-American and the two time Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year.

This offseason after a disappointing 2012 season by James Franklin, largely the result of multiple injuries, the coaches opened up the QB competition and Mauk impressed the coaches a great deal and made it a legit competition.  It did not take long for him to move past last season's #2 QB, Berkstresser and start making a push at Franklin.  If at any point Franklin would have regressed during that competition I have no doubt that Coach Pinkel would have pulled the trigger in favor of Mauk despite Franklin being a senior.  The competition was that close.

But now Mauk faces a whole new type of competition in the Florida Gators defense.  This Florida Gators defense is the real deal, especially in the secondary.  Make no mistake about it, Loucheiz Purifoy, Marcus Roberson, Vernon Hargreaves III and Brian Poole are the real deal at cornerback.  Then when you add to that that they play Jaylen Watkins and Cody Riggs at safety, both who originally played CB at Florida and every player on the back end of their defense can cover.  An example of just how good that group can be, they held LSU and Zach Mettenberger to only 152 yards passing and no TD's.

It is going to be a huge test for Mauk and for Coach Henson to find a way to scheme a way to get Maty comfortable and put him in a position to make plays.  But at the same time the biggest key for Mauk is going to be to respect the football and not turn it over allowing Florida to get the ball with good field position.  If Maty does not turn it over I see the Florida offense struggling to put points on the board against our defense at home.
