Southeast Missouri State thought it was going to trick Missouri with a quick-kick punt. It failed spectacularly. After a false start penalty forced the Redhawks into a 4th-and-10 near midfield, the call was for a quick punt by quarterback Tay Bender instead of going for the first down. Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers read the play and got in the backfield immediately off the snap, blocking the kick. The ball flew into the air and was caught by cornerback Aarion Penton, who returned it 44 yards for a touchdown and a 27-3 lead for the Tigers. It's the first time we can remember a quick-kick – designed to net the defense some field position with minimal risk – blocked. It was a needed boost for Missouri, which had failed to put the game away against its in-state FCS opponent. While Southeast Missouri State never looked like it would threaten the Tigers, Missouri's offense had been extremely stagnant since the first quarter.
